Time has gone so fast… 3 years ago, this time of the year, I was in Langobaya, a remoted community of HIV positive people in Kenya. The experience there was so touching, meeting all those people that would change my life forever. One of those people was George, a crazy Greek guy who volunteered with the team and had a passion for life like no other. He made an impression from the first day and he made sure to amuse us every night with his guitar and his loud voice. He was a traveller and that made him extra special to me since i am obsessed with countries and their culture. So for today’s 3Q&A I present you a very interesting travel lover, George Donios:
Q: What is your job actually and allow you so much free time to spend on holidays? (we’re kind of jealous of that, we could use a piece of advice hahaha)
A: Though it seems weird I hold a senior position in a multinational corporation. I am South East Asia regional manager for strategic procurement and that means that I manage 5 countries and hence I do travel a lot for work. The trick here is that every time I fly for business I always, but ALWAYS, take my Friday off and enjoy a long weekend exploring parts of the countries I go to. Call it diving, horse riding, or simply getting lost in a new neighbourhood of Saigon, Bangkok, or Manila is a necessity for me. Work is a means for income and not a life driver for me. I draw strict lines on my working hours and make sure I stick to them. Since my job is a very demanding one and a stressful ordeal so to speak, I counterbalance it with strong injections of fun. Besides as Onassis once said, ¨One have to be serious at work and crazy at life¨and so do I.
Q: Where have you been so far in 2014 and what experience was the most valuable?
A: Hmmm..lets see, Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perhentian islands, Cebu island, Tioman island, Redang island, Aur island, Kuching. Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh, Hue, Hoi An, Thailand: Bangkok, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Nepal, Indonesia: Sumatra, Java, Bali, Philippines: Manila, Cebu island, Malapascua island, Bohol island, Hong Kong, India: Mumbai, Goa. I believe I have captured all of my travelling destinations in 2014. My most intense traveling experience was at Hong Kong where I joined the umbrella revolution for a day (from sunrise to sunset).
Q: Where is your dream trip?
A: My dream trip at the moment is already happening. It is a perpetual trip to Cavafis ‘Ithaca’ where there are many summer mornings with, what pleasure, what joy, I set into harbours seen for the first time. Having Singapore as my base so to speak, every time I hear this inner voice calling for yet another adventure I just get my self on a plane and take off. There are so many places to see, so many people to get to know to, so many traditions to explore in this part of the world that the list is never ending.
My supporting picture is all my happy moments; I snatch them and I paste them on my awl so that every time that life or works gets the best of me and I feel down, all I have to do is take a look at my wall and realise the wealth that this life is offering me.
